DRAMA CIRCLE THEATRE TRUST
Grant Awards 2009

The Trustees of the Drama Circle Theatre Trust were delighted to make grants in 2009 to two of the applicants for financial assistance towards a specific course or project, designed to improve his or her skills or knowledge of some aspect of theatre. All the succesful applicants presented themselves with interest and enthusiasm during their interviews.

The recipients of the grants were -

Amy Harper (Belfast)

Amy has extensive experience playing leading roles in musical theatre, as well as giving vocal and drama classes with young children, despite her own relative youth. She has gained, over the years, many qualifications in Dance as well as Musical Theatre. She applied and was accepted at Central School of Speech and Drama, University of London, for a BA Honours Degree in Drama. She has been working hard to build some financial backing and was successful in being awarded a grant by the Trustees towards her fees and living expenses while being in London for three years.

Amy writes:
I have had the most amazing time at Central so far, although it has been very challenging and hard work.  I have learnt so much already, not only about the art of acting but about myself.....it's true what they say, at drama school you find yourself.

London life is certainly a big change from Belfast, and everything is much more expensive....every penny counts.  I know I have a long way to go in this business but I am fully prepared for what lies ahead, and Drama school is certainly helping me along the way.

Thomas Olver (Belfast)

Although still at school, Thomas has shown great promise and talent in various leading roles, both in musical and straight drama. He was accepted for Stageworks Annual Drama Summer School in Gormanston where he hoped to acquire further skills to be of use in his future theatre work.

Thomas writes:
I spent an extremely enjoyable week on my chosen course which was "Playing Comedy". I had the opportunity to explore comedies from completely different eras and styles. Despite the long working day, I found every task extremely enjoyable and advantageous to my ability in playing comedy. In general, Stageworks has made me a more confident actor and had taught me to be more conscientious of the pace and tone of comic texts.
